A Few More Mug Rugs and Lilly of the Woods Fairy Progress

I made a few more mug rugs, finally.  I don’t know where the time goes sometimes.  The summer is quickly slipping away.  I have been spending quite a bit of time working on my curriculum planning for my classroom.  I did, however, work in some time to get some more mug rugs completed.  I really like how these turned out . The first one has an antique lace doily to set your mug on.  It is super girly and so adorable.  If you are a fan of purple and polka dots and vintage, this is the mug rug for you.

I also made this one, using one of my “Fandango” by Kate Spain charm squares.  I love the colors of this one.  It is so bright and cheery.  I used a log cabin design on the left (an old quilt block pattern).  There are no fancy embellishments on this one, but I did use a thick, zig-zag stitch around the edge for some more texture.

I’ve also been working on my Lilly of the Woods Fairy cross-stitch.  It is coming along, just taking forever.  I also realized that I’m missing some of the threads (mostly Kreinik metallics) that I need.  Here is my progress from my last post on this project.  Today I’m going to work on making a wall calendar for my classroom.  I’ll take pictures to share later.  Happy Crafting!

Today Was A Crafty Day

Today, I spent a large majority of my day working in my craft room.  It looks like a tornado hit it, but I was successful in completing not one, not two, but three projects!  I had to make some more mug rugs to sell in my Etsy store.  I am even more low on items than last week.  So I finished these three very different mug rugs.  The first one is an American flag inspired mug rug.  I just love this zigzag fabric and I thought that it evoked the feeling of the stripes in an interesting way.  The back is the star fabric from the front.

Then I made this pretty one with a gorgeous floral and natural linen.  I also added antique lace that I got at the antique market last weekend and a beaded embellishment which used to reside on a t-shirt I bought a while back from JCrew.  The beading was too heavy for the lightweight fabric of the shirt so, I took them off.  I thought it would add the perfect, girly touch for this mug rug, and I was right.  It is so cute!

Finally, I just finished this one.  It is made with a panel from some bird fabric that my mom sent me a few months ago.  I just love the colors.  I used a cool batik on the right with some antique lace separating the two sides.  Then I sewed some buttons in the bottom, right corner for some added embellishment.  I love the way this one turned out too.

Mug Rugs

When I first heard of mug rugs, I had no idea what they were.  Now I love them and have decided to make one for myself.  This is it.  It is a rug for my mug, tea-cup, glass, etc.  If you are new to the idea, you are probably wondering, like I did, what makes this different from a coaster?  Well, let me tell you.  A mug rug is slightly larger than a coaster but smaller than a place mat.  It is the perfect size for a mug or tea-cup with a little room on the side for a snack! 

Sadly, I do not have any snacks in my house that were cute enough for photographing.  The granola bar just didn’t look right.  So, I guess I need to get some snack “props” for future pictures.  Here is it with one of my vintage tea cups and saucers.  Cute right?

And here it is with my royal wedding bone china cup. 

I created this by cutting 2 1/2″ squares of coordinating fabric.  Then I used some of the squares for a 9 patch block.  On the right, where you would put a treat, I used a different fabric and pieced three squares together.  Then I had some fun with my GO! Baby cutter and cut a bird out and used heatnbond to adhere it.  I think for future projects, I will applique the bird or other shapes on, or get the heatnbond that I can also sew through.  This is too thick and stiff for my tastes, but it is a good first try.  Then I sewed on honey bun strips of 1 1/2″ fabric for the border.  I tried the turning out method instead of using a binding, but I think that next time I will use a binding.  I think I’ll like the look of that better.  The back is made from the green polka dot fabric from the front. 

I think I’ll use this one in my craft room.  It looks cute next to my sewing machine.  Now on to make some more to sell on my Etsy site.  I am extremely low on my inventory.
