Ohio Star Blocks

Chosen fabrics for pillow front.

Chosen fabrics for pillow front.

Today I’m working on a custom order for some pillows.  My mom and dad are getting their house ready to sell, and they have neutralized all of the paint in their house (a.k.a. no color on the walls).  I was visiting them a couple of weeks ago, and helped them paint.  While I was there my mom mentioned that she needed to make some new pillows for her living room couch.  She asked what colors I would recommend, and I suggested green and magenta because she had a photo of a flower with those colors in it and a lovely Austrian vase with similar tones.  I was going to help her pick some fabrics while I was there, but we just ran out of time.  So when I got home, I called her and told her that I would love to make some pillows for her.  I already have some pillow forms from Ikea (20″ square) and as you know, I have a lot of fabric.  She took me up on my offer, so I got to work.

It took me a little while to decide what pattern to use for the main block.  I chose the Ohio Star block pattern from Amy @ Stitchery Dickory Docks’ BOM Craftsy class last year.  I love the flower fabric, it is so vibrant and lovely, and I knew that it would be perfect for the center square of the block.  I fussy cut the flowers from the fabric to showcase the pop of magenta.  I matched the magenta color for the hour-glass blocks.  I combined the magenta cotton with a white linen.  I love the contrast of the two fabrics.

Once the Ohio Star blocks were done, I used a thin border of a lime green cotton to outline the blocks and bring in the green from the flowers.  Then, I chose a darker khaki fabric for the sashing, but I wasn’t in love with the solid color, so I decided to break it up with some more fussy cut flowers from the main floral fabric.  It is finished off with a border of white, which I will also use for the back envelope opening.  (That’s not finished yet!)  Here is the finished pillow front.  I am trying to decide whether to add some thin batting behind the cover and do a little quilting before attaching the back.  Check back tomorrow for a look at the final pillows!

April Block Finish

20130413-095700.jpg

I finished the April block for the Sugar Block Club, and I really like it. Don’t you love the orange deer print? It’s from Momo’s Oh Deer line from Moda. So cute!

This was a paper pieced block and it went really quickly. I live how Amy (the pattern designer) includes instructions on what size to cut the fabric for the piecing. That way there isn’t a lot if wasted fabric.

Now I’m off to work on some other projects and hopefully get my closet organized. I was hoping to pack away my winter stuff but we are expecting more snow and cold on Monday and Tuesday. I won’t complain though because we need the moisture.

I also started Crossfit this week. My husband and I signed up for intro classes and we have finished the first three if six before we can move into the regular classes. I’m really loving it! It’s challenging and fun and constantly changing so it doesn’t get boring. Between that and running and eating clean, I’ve lost 7 lbs in two weeks! Yay!

Well I hope you have a great Saturday. I’m going to get out and enjoy the near 70 degree temps. I’ve even busted out my shorts for today.

A New Valentiney Pillow and Some Giant Hexagons!

20130206-203551.jpg

Isn’t is cute? I made it today with scrap fabric from other previous projects. I was inspired by my BOM from my Sugar block club this weekend, so I made another block with Valentiney scraps and turned it into a pillow.

Here is the block before it became a pillow. I added two borders to the original block.

I wish the pictures were better but it is super dark and I can’t seem to get enough light no matter where I put it. It looks super cute on my couch though. A great little touch of the holidays.

I’ve also been busy hand sewing hexagons with my “Field Study” fabric. They are going to look really great when I get them done. I can’t decide what to do with them yet. I’m thinking long lines of them down a solid background, but I don’t know what color yet. Hmmmmm…

Well, I hope you are having a productive week of crafting and living full lives. Have a great rest of the week!
